Aid Stations

I met up with Kate and Brendan today. They had been 'on the road' for almost 24 hours before they got into Cape Town late last night.

Still fighting off the palpable jetlag, we got down to business over lunch at the Victoria and Alfred (that's V&A to the locals) Waterfront and proceeded to outline a plan for the Cape Epic. Here are just some of the main pointers about our aid station strategy for the ABSA Cape Epic, including points about the weather and conditions on course that will affect our plans:

- Kate will be manning all the Aid Station #3s on the course
- There are a maximum number of 3 aid stations on all days EXCEPT the Prologue stage and the last stage (at only 54km long this year). Translation: we only expect to see Kate 6 times
- It's a long way between aid stations on some of these legs - consider the 145km-long Stage 2 for instance, and you start to see the enormity of the race
- The initial strategy of racing with only 2 water bottles per person still holds; we just have to make sure we fill up FULL at every aid station
- Brendan reminded that it is advisable to ask for 'half-and-half' electrolyte sports drink at the aid stations as the standard (instructed?) concentration of mix for said drink tastes way too thick and sweet
- There is Coca-Cola served at aid stations - the presence of Coke on the course is a major plus for Brendan and me, who have grown to love it over several multi-day / multi-stage adventure races as well as shorter events such as Ironman and endurance MTB races
- All aid stations are equipped with refridgerator trucks which takes care of the ICE and the COLD DRINKS, regardless of outdoor ambient temperature
- Here's a look at the weather forecast for one of the areas we are racing through: Citrusdal weather forecast

Yeah, it's going to blardy hot, and that's simply understating things.

I told Brendan that the temperature range (both the minimum and maximum per day) was comparable to the temperature range we experienced in XPD Cairns in 2010 in the outback sections of that race.
